In the wake of globalization, innovation and cluster management has gained importance as a decisive element behind the success of a business enterprise. However, little is known about new innovation management and cluster strategies in the European Union. For example the concept of innovation clusters is a modern description of the long observed phenomenon of geographical concentration of economic activities, which is widely believed to be an important factor for economic development. The concentration of economic activities in clusters is viewed as the result of “competitive advantages” of firms in finding new and better ways to compete in an industry and to bring innovation faster to the market. How much must the European innovation and cluster management policy change in order to become more competitive again and how much can the management in Europe continue to rely on its traditional strengths? What are the main advantages of the new European Institute for Innovation and Technology? What is the basic concept of this Institute? What are the lessons learned?
